Waipawa is the second-largest town in Central Hawke's Bay. In 2001 it had a population of 1,872. It is located seven kilometres northeast of Waipukurau and 65 kilometres southwest of Waipawa, on the northern bank of the Waipawa River. The main office of the district council is located here. Waipawa was apparently the first inland European settlement in New Zealand.
