Pauanui is situated on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. It lies at the mouth of the Tairua River on its south bank, directly opposite the larger town of Tairua. The resident population of around 700 swells to 15,000 in the summer holidays. The name means Big Paua (abalone) in Maori.
